REBORN - Closing the loop on battery life
REBORN develops modular, safe, and cost-efficient battery systems for the reuse of lithium-ion batteries. The aim is to extend service life, minimize waste, and strengthen Europe's competitiveness in battery value creation. AI-supported data analysis, intelligent battery management systems, and innovative design and dismantling strategies enable flexible second-life solutions for energy storage and mobility. REBORN thus makes an essential contribution to the circular economy, reduces CO₂ emissions, and promotes a more resilient, sustainable energy system.
The Security in Mobility research group at THI, led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans-Joachim Hof, is developing a comprehensive cybersecurity architecture for batteries in first- and second-life applications as part of the REBORN project. The focus is on ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability, as well as securing wireless communication between the battery management system and the cloud. In addition, THI is conducting security tests, supporting the project in battery safety, and advising on the development of a unique “battery fingerprint” technology for the reliable identification of battery systems.
