An essential purpose of the ever-increasing spread of driver assistance systems is to achieve the Vision Zero, the goal of zero road fatalities. This goal can be achieved by eliminating human error as the main cause of accidents through advanced assistance systems and automated driving. However, these systems can only be widely accepted by the population if the accidents that occur despite the systems can be fully clarified by independent investigations.

For vehicles already on the market with active/autonomous safety devices, classical accident analysis is not sufficient to fully investigate many accidents. From the point of view of an accident analysis, especially with regard to highly automated vehicle systems, a sophisticated designed, standardized EDR (EventDataRecorder) must be formulated as an absolutely necessary requirement for the legislator.

A broad-based cooperation of expert organisations, scientific institutions, insurance companies, suppliers, OEMs and the judiciary seems to be the most effective way to actually implement this demand. The goal must be at least a European, but preferably a worldwide standard. The AHEAD working group, founded for this purpose with the participation of TH Ingolstadt, is pursuing precisely this vision:

Legal certainty and data protection for all through a mandatory, standardized EDR for automated vehicles.

AHEAD's core group comprises the following stakeholders:
